The Ruins of Basohli Fort

The Ruins of Basohli Fort

Basohli, Jammu and Kashmir

Basohli is situated on the right bank of the River Ravi in Kathua district.

Raja Bhog Pal, a son of the then Raja of Kullu founded Balor State (today Billawar, Basohli) in the 8th century. It seems that the history of Basohli is not very clear till around the 17th century, but what can be said is that Basohli painting began to be executed in the 17th century.

Basohli painting has a peculiar style. Among those, there are some paintings usein of strong colours and iridescent beetle wings. These are vigorous and have a unique charm.

Some murals in the Ruins of Basohli Fort

Early 18th century

Only a few murals still remained in 2014

We can have a glimpse how structures were constructed at that time.

The ruins of Basohli Fort overlooked the pond in 2014. However, according to what we heard that the pond was reclaimed and something was built on there.
